Mixed media collage, part of "Shrine" series.
"Shrine" series Photoetching of Brahmayani (Nepalese Goddess of Creativity) marionette contained within a shrine like form, 1984, intaglio/photoetching and relief print.
Elements of this image: Russian Matrushka doll that Myril played with as a child; child jumping rope from "Children's Games" series; star map drawn with white colored pencil on black paper; the white background represents the cosmos; the Matrushka dolls, which nest inside of one another, represented "infinity" to Myril. She described the anxiety that she felt as a child when she imagined the dolls nesting one inside another ad infinitum. She named one of her series of Matrushka images "The Anxiety if the Infinite.
"Children's Games" series. Myril combined linoleum cuts made by her art students with her own imagery, including the Russian Matrushka doll. The series was exhibited at the West Broadway Gallery, a cooperative gallery started by a group of artists during the early days of the Soho gallery scene in New York City (1970's?).
